Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea: Why the Greeks Matter (Hinges of History) Overview

In Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea, his fourth volume to explore “the hinges of history,” Thomas Cahill escorts the reader on another entertaining—and historically unassailable—journey through the landmarks of art and bloodshed that defined Greek culture nearly three millennia ago.

In the city-states of Athens and Sparta and throughout the Greek islands, honors could be won in making love and war, and lives were rife with contradictions. By developing the alphabet, the Greeks empowered the reader, demystified experience, and opened the way for civil discussion and experimentation—yet they kept slaves. The glorious verses of the Iliad recount a conflict in which rage and outrage spur men to action and suggest that their “bellicose society of gleaming metals and rattling weapons” is not so very distant from more recent campaigns of “shock and awe.” And, centuries before Zorba, Greece was a land where music, dance, and freely flowing wine were essential to the high life. Granting equal time to the sacred and the profane, Cahill rivets our attention to the legacies of an ancient and enduring worldview.

TRIBES OF LEGEND: Fantasy, Myths, Magic and Mayhem Gaming and Modelling in the World of Greek Gods and Legends Overview

There are many writings about ancient cultures lurking in the dusty books of academia, but few capture the imagination like the legends and myths of the ancient Greeks where heroes and monsters live or die in struggles for survival, honor and glory - all under the watchful gaze of their meddlesome gods. These tales not only evoke images of warriors in gleaming bronze armor and beautiful women dressed in flowing white robes, but relate many wondrous stories of heroism and adventure, death and glory; the noble sacrifice of the 300 Spartans, the famous deception of the wooden horse and the voyage of Jason and the Argonauts to name but three. This book contains not one, but three separate games set in this ancient world of myth, magic and monsters, ranging from full scale battles to a game for a single hero having to overcome all of the obstacles that mortals and gods in their whim and wisdom devise. However, this book is much more than a collection of games for it also includes guides for building terrain on your tabletop and a series of step-by-step instructions on how to paint the models you might want to play with - the photographs in this book show the models at their best, in their natural habitat: heroes and monsters locked in honorable combat. So what will be your first foray into this ancient realm? Are you a lone hero or a leader of armies?Decide, and then summon your courage, offer your prayer and, whichever game you play, may the gods smile on you.

Great Price for $26.54 The Jewish Annotated New Testament

The Jewish Annotated New Testament Review

CHECK PRICE TODAY!

The Jewish Annotated New Testament Overview

Although major New Testament figures--Jesus and Paul, Peter and James, Jesus' mother Mary and Mary Magdalene--were Jews, living in a culture steeped in Jewish history, beliefs, and practices, there has never been an edition of the New Testament that addresses its Jewish background and the culture from which it grew--until now. In The Jewish Annotated New Testament, eminent experts under the general editorship of Amy-Jill Levine and Marc Z. Brettler put these writings back into the context of their original authors and audiences. And they explain how these writings have affected the relations of Jews and Christians over the past two thousand years.

An international team of scholars introduces and annotates the Gospels, Acts, Letters, and Revelation from Jewish perspectives, in the New Revised Standard Version translation. They show how Jewish practices and writings, particularly the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible, influenced the New Testament writers. From this perspective, readers gain new insight into the New Testament's meaning and significance. In addition, thirty essays on historical and religious topics--Divine Beings, Jesus in Jewish thought, Parables and Midrash, Mysticism, Jewish Family Life, Messianic Movements, Dead Sea Scrolls, questions of the New Testament and anti-Judaism, and others--bring the Jewish context of the New Testament to the fore, enabling all readers to see these writings both in their original contexts and in the history of interpretation. For readers unfamiliar with Christian language and customs, there are explanations of such matters as the Eucharist, the significance of baptism, and "original sin."

For non-Jewish readers interested in the Jewish roots of Christianity and for Jewish readers who want a New Testament that neither proselytizes for Christianity nor denigrates Judaism, The Jewish Annotated New Testament is an essential volume that places these writings in a context that will enlighten students, professionals, and general readers.

Great Price for $24.95 Clodia: A Sourcebook (Oklahoma Series in Classical Culture)

Clodia: A Sourcebook (Oklahoma Series in Classical Culture) Review

CHECK PRICE TODAY!

Clodia: A Sourcebook (Oklahoma Series in Classical Culture) Overview

A striking portrait of one of the most fascinating women in Roman history

Noble and notorious, the flamboyant Clodia Metelli was the object of passion in poetry and prose in ancient Rome and appears in more written sources than any other woman of her day. Cicero, in a famous oration, branded her a whore yet in private correspondence mentions seeking her help. Her stormy affair with the poet Catullus—the Western world’s first recorded romance with a real and richly characterized woman—had a profound influence on erotic literature.

Bringing together works by Cicero, Catullus, and others in which Clodia plays a part, Julia Dyson Hejduk has produced a striking portrait of one of the most fascinating women in Roman history. Her accurate and accessible English translations include not only all the classical texts that mention Clodia, but also a substantial selection of Roman erotic poetry by Propertius, Tibullus, and Ovid. While many sourcebooks offer only small illustrative excerpts, Clodia provides most sources in their entirety, such as the Pro Caelio of Cicero, nineteen complete letters, all of Catullus’s poems on “Lesbia” (his pseudonym for Clodia), and many subsequent love elegies.

Hejduk’s translations please the ear while remaining faithful to the original meaning. Her introduction reviews topics in classical culture and themes in Roman love poetry, placing the texts in their literary, social, and historical context and making them accessible to high school students and undergraduates. Notes, glossary, and bibliography make the book a well-rounded teaching tool.
