Altar Magic (Little Books (Crossing Press)) Overview

The purpose of any altar, says D. J. Conway, is to symbolize what we want to attract into our lives. In A Little Book of Altar Magic, she shows how, without knowing they are doing so, people are constantly building altars around them, and she encourages readers to make altars consciously, using them to create a sacred space in the home. The very act of creating an altar teaches the builder to listen to the subconscious and become receptive to the sacred in life, Conway suggests. She explains the process in simple terms: planning the project, acknowledging the emotions behind the decision, and doing the actual building. The book guides the reader to what items to look for in furnishing an altar, giving information gleaned from historical and modern approaches on the use of colors, the elements, objects, and symbols.

Buy full audiobook: www.qksrv.net List of award-winning audiobooks: awardwinningaudiobooks.weebly.com Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school...again. No matter how hard he tries, he can't seem to stay out of trouble. But can he really be expected to stand by and watch while a bully picks on his scrawny best friend? Or not defend himself against his pre-algebra teacher when she turns into a monster and tries to kill him? Of course, no one believes Percy about the monster incident; he's not even sure he believes himself. Until the Minotaur chases him to summer camp. Suddenly, mythical creatures seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology textbook and into his life. The gods of Mount Olympus, he's coming to realize, are very much alive in the 21st-century. And worse, he's angered a few of them: Zeus's master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Now Percy has just 10 days to find and return Zeus's stolen property, and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. On a daring road trip from their summer camp in New York to the gates of the Underworld in Los Angeles, Percy and his friends, one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena, will face a host of enemies determined to stop them. Burzum - Belus' Død

Belus is the seventh full-length album by the Norwegian black metal band Burzum. The first studio album to be released after a near 11-year hiatus, it is expected to be released on March 8, 2010 via Byelobog Productions. Belus will be the first album to be released after Varg Vikernes' May 2009 parole from prison, where he served almost 16 years of a 21-year murder sentence. In November 2009, he announced an upcoming release of the new album, initially titled Den Hvite Guden ("The White God" in Norwegian). It is dedicated to the White God, known across Europe, according to Vikernes, under different names, such as Apollo, Baldr, Belenus, Belus, Bragi, Belobog, Jarilo and others. In December 2009, Vikernes announced changing of the title to Belus due to what he described was a backlash against the perceived racist nature of the album. Vikernes maintains that the previous title had nothing to do with skin colour and racism, but was simply a reflection of Baldr being associated with light. The names used in the track titles are the supposed Proto-Indo-European names of the gods of European mythology. Belus is analogous to the Norse god Baldr. Lukan is analogous to Loki. Kaimadalthas is equivalent to Heimdallr and Hermóðr (who Vikernes believes were initially the same god, Haimaþellar). Kelio is equivalent to the Norse Hel as well as Hades from the Greek mythology. The album will be about 50 minutes long, originally containing nine metal tracks and an ambient intro and outro ...

Hell in Contemporary Literature: Western Descent Narratives since 1945 Review

Hell in Contemporary Literature: Western Descent Narratives since 1945 Overview

This book explores the idea that modern, Western secular cultures have retained a belief in the concept of Hell as an event or experience of endless or unjust suffering. In contemporary society, the descent to Hell has come to represent the means of recovering—or discovering—selfhood.

Hell in Contemporary Literature discusses descent journeys in Holocaust testimony and fiction, memoirs of mental illness, and feminist, postmodern, and post-colonial narratives written after 1945. A wide range of texts is discussed, including writing by Primo Levi, W. G. Sebald, Anne Michaels, Alasdair Gray, and Salman Rushdie, and films such as Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now and the Matrix trilogy. Drawing on theoretical writings by Bakhtin, Levinas, Derrida, Judith Butler, David Harvey, and Paul Ricoeur, the book addresses broader issues such as narration and identity, the ethics of the subject, and trauma and memory.

Great Price for $68.07 Virgin Mother Goddesses of Antiquity

Virgin Mother Goddesses of Antiquity Review

CHECK PRICE TODAY!

Virgin Mother Goddesses of Antiquity Overview

Various goddesses of the ancient Mediterranean world were once understood to be Virgin Mothers––creators who birthed the entire cosmos without need of a male consort. This is the first book to explore evidence of the original parthenogenetic power of deities such as Athena, Hera, Artemis, Gaia, Demeter, Persephone, and the Gnostic Sophia. It provides stunning feminist insights about the deeper meaning of related stories, such as the judgment of Paris, the labors of Heracles, and the exploits of the Amazons. It also roots the Thesmophoria and Eleusinian Mysteries in female parthenogenetic power, thereby providing what is at long last a coherent understanding of these mysterious rites.

"The Passion of Maryam" by Loren Woodson- Book Review

Loren Woodson's "The Passion of Maryam" is not an easy book. I am not saying this in a derogatory way. It is not an easy book in several ways; first is the subject - Woodson deals with the life of Mary, mother of Jesus - or Maryam and Yeshua, as they are referred to in the book. While the gospels revealed a tiny art of her life and her story, Woodson tries to make us reconsider her entire story - or her story as he reconstructed it. It is not an easy story or a happy one.

Second is the language. While undoubtedly beautiful and probably suitable for the period described in the book, I found it sometimes hard to follow. It was impossible to finish this book quickly - at most I managed to read a couple of dozen pages a day. The inclusion of Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic words slowed down my reading even further. While there is a glossary included at the end of the book it still takes time to check the words again and again to insure one is reading them correctly. The writing style is elaborate and sometimes slightly convoluted. "While she had not retched her already empty belly, there was utterly no mortal way Maryam could tolerate looking at her son without going into paroxysms of shrieking and sobbing. And in fully encountering the miserable form of her firstborn before her, the deepest, most jagged shards of grief about the rape were being exclaimed, some having lain loculated I her soul. In spewing such renewed pain, as much as she wanted to disappear, melt into the hard limestone beneath her, she could not leave, she was absolutely clear about that."

It is also hard to cast aside the teachings one has been lead to believe one's entire life. Woodson's rendition of Mary's story is plausible and very intriguing, yet quite far from what I was taught. While I am not dismissing it, I'll probably need to read the book again and reflect on it some more.

If you are looking for a quick, easy and amusing read - stay clear of Loren Woodson's "The Passion of Maryam." It is none of these. But if you are willing to open your mind to some new ideas and do some serious reading, by all means invest in this book. It is one of those that one needs to be read more than once.

Egyptian Canopic Jars - Storing Mummy Parts With Style

Most people think about mummies and the process of making mummies whenever they hear the words Ancient Egypt. However, not many are aware that Egyptian canopic jars were vital in the process and rituals linked with making mummies. So what are canopic jars and what were their roles in the Ancient Egyptian ritual for the dead? Well, during the mummification ritual, the viscera or the major organs found in the middle part of the human body were removed from the deceased. And such organs were stored in wide-necked cylindrical containers called canopic jars.

It is important to note that the heart was one organ that was not placed in Egyptian canopic jars. The heart was left inside the mummified body as Ancient Egyptians believed that it contained the spirit and senses of the departed and that it would be required when the dead faced Judgment Day in the Underworld. The only organs that were placed in canopic jars include the lungs, liver, stomach, and intestines.

Four Egyptian canopic jars were needed during a mummification process because the four aforementioned organs had to be stored individually. These funerary jars were ornately decorated. However, the decorations and the materials used to make the jar usually varied, depending on the status and wealth of the deceased. Jars could be made from stone, calcite or alabaster, wood, pottery, bronze, or even gold for the very wealthy and powerful.

What makes Egyptian canopic jars interesting, even today, are the lid stoppers. If you see an Egyptian funerary jar, you will surely wonder why it has a lid stopper that is designed after the head of an animal or man. As mentioned earlier, four jars were needed to store each visceral organ. You will know what organ is inside the jar by looking at its lid stopper's decoration or sculpture. According to the belief of Ancient Egyptians, certain gods protect each organ. The jar that contains the liver has a painting or sculpture of a man's head because the god Imsety, protector of the liver, is depicted with a man's head. The jar containing the stomach contains jackal decorations in honor of Duamutef, while the jar storing the intestines has a head of a falcon to represent the god Qebehseneuf. Since the god Hapi is the protector of the lungs, the canopic jar with a representation of a baboon's head on its lid contains the lungs.
